Human Consciousness Could Be a Side Effect of Entropy, Study Suggests

A 2016 study suggests that human consciousness could be a side effect of our brains maximizing their information content, moving towards a state of entropy, similar to the Universe. Researchers from the University of Toronto and Paris Descartes University used statistical mechanics to model the networks of neurons in nine people’s brains, finding higher entropy in fully conscious states. This leads to the hypothesis that consciousness could be an emergent property of a system maximizing information exchange.
