Hackers shut down 2 of the world’s most advanced telescopes


Leading astronomical observatories have suffered cyberattacks, causing temporary shutdowns. The National Science Foundation’s National Optical-Infrared Astronomy Research Laboratory (NOIRLab) halted operations at its Gemini North Telescope in Hawaii and Gemini South Telescope in Chile following a cybersecurity incident on August 1. The nature and origin of the attacks remain unclear. This comes as the US National Counterintelligence and Security Center warned about the threat of cyberattacks and espionage on American space companies and research organizations.
