Artists Lose First Round of Copyright Infringement Case Against AI Art Generators


A US judge has dismissed most claims in a landmark lawsuit against AI art generators Midjourney and DeviantArt, over the unauthorized use of billions of images to train AI systems. The judge ruled that copyright infringement claims were “defective in numerous respects”, including whether the AI systems contained copies of copyrighted images. However, a claim against Stability AI for direct infringement was allowed to proceed. The case could set a precedent for future disputes over AI’s use of copyrighted material.
