Malicious HDMI Cables Steals Photos, Videos, and Location Data


John Bumstead of 404Media discovered an iPhone-to-HDMI adapter that prompts users to download an invasive app through a QR code. The app collects various data and sends it to China. The adapter was included with a malicious lightning cable resembling Apple’s design. The app requests access to the local network, photos, settings, Bluetooth, and camera, aiming to collect data for targeted ads. This discovery is significant in light of the FTC’s Amazon lawsuit, highlighting site navigation issues and spammy ads.
