Developers initially embraced Claude Code for coding, but its versatility led them to explore its potential for various tasks, sparking the creation of Cowork. Now in research preview for Claude Max subscribers on macOS, Cowork allows anyone to collaborate with Claude beyond coding. Users can direct Claude to access specific folders, enabling it to efficiently manage files, draft documents, and more, all while actively keeping users updated.
Unlike a mere chat, Cowork treats tasks like message exchanges with a diligent coworker, allowing task queuing and parallel processing. Once you’ve grasped the basics, you can boost Cowork’s power using connectors and skills for advanced document creation. Cowork can even tackle tasks needing browser access when paired with Claude in Chrome.
User control is paramount: you decide what Claude interacts with, and it pauses for confirmation before significant actions. However, be mindful of misinterpretations or external tamper attempts—known as “prompt injections”—and provide clear instructions to mitigate risks. As Cowork evolves, expect features like cross-device sync and expanded safety measures. Claude Max users can dive into Cowork today via the macOS app, while others can join a waitlist for access.
